Student Information

We are especially excited to invite all students to present at the Joint Symposium. The following is information for student delegates to help with registration and other opportunities at the symposium.

Student Delegates

For student registrations, including from developing countries, to qualify for the student rate, you must send documentary proof (digital scan, pdfs, etc.) that you are a current and full-time student at a recognized educational institution.

Documentation could include your unofficial transcripts, your current semester course enrollment, a letter from your supervisor or other department/university official, etc. Please ask us if you have any questions.

You will be considered a student if you are enrolled as a student for most of the year 2023 (i.e., at least until the end of December 2023).

Delegates from Developing Countries

For Student Delegates attending from a developing country, only current residents of India or countries determined to be a Low Income according to Group A and B of the WHO HINARI and Research4Life List (listed here), are eligible. Email the Organizers with your information.

Student Presentation Awards

A panel of judges will evaluate student oral and poster presentations to award top prizes for research presented at the symposium.

Decisions will be based on, but not limited to:
- Understandability and impact (scientifically and aesthetically)
- Balance among presentation style (e.g., of allotted time for introduction, results, discussion for talks or of visual content of text, figures, and tables for posters)
- Evident scholarships, scientific novelty, and excellence
- Response to questions and familiarity of subject matter

Wolf Vishniac Memorial Award in Biogeochemistry

Any early-career biogeochemistry investigator or student (35 years or younger) may compete for the Wolf Vishniac Memorial Award, presented by the International Society for Environmental Biogeochemistry.

To be eligible, the applicant must be the first author of either an oral or poster presentation given at the Joint ISEB-ISSM Symposium in Banff, Canada, during the week of October 22-28, 2023.

To apply, a single pdf file including (1) a cover letter, (2) a complete but unsubmitted/unpublished manuscript (including text, figures, appendices, etc.), and (3) a current curriculum vitae must be emailed to the conference organizers on or before September 22, 2023.

The cover letter needs to include an explanation of their eligibility and intended destination for the manuscript. Manuscripts can be submitted to pre-print servers, but cannot yet be accepted for publication in a journal.

About us

The International Society for Environmental Biogeochemistry and the International Society for Subsurface Microbiology teamed up in 2005 for their first joint symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This 2023 gathering of both societies will be the  2nd joint symposium, but separately will be the 25th symposium for ISEB and the 11th symposium for ISSM.
